INTRODUCTION TO THE NDT WORLD
What exactly is NDT? NDT is an acronym for Non-destructive Testing. It may interchangeably be referred to as NDI or NDE meaning, Non-Destructive inspection or Non-destructive examination respectively. NDT is a combination of various inspection techniques used individually or collectively to evaluate the integrity and properties of structures, materials, components or systems without causing damage to them. It is therefore used for the detection, characterization and sizing of inherent discontinuities. Correct application of the NDT process by a skilled technician ensures that a discontinuity is detected before it grows out of limits hence causing a catastrophe.
Technical team having a light moment after being certificated by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) as the only standalone AMO approved on Limited capability to perform specialised services of NDT in aviation industry.
COMPANY HISTORY
NDT Support Services was founded in 2009 by James Kamau who had a wealth of experience from Kenya Airways as the head of NDT facility a position he had held between 1997 and 2008 . With a backup from the top management, he modernized the Kenya Airways NDT facility to international standards. When Kenya Airways invited EASA to come over and audit the engineering department, NDT facility was the first section of the department to pass the audit with very few findings. Before James Kamau became the head of NDT Facility in Kenya Airways he had worked under NDT Expatriates between 1983 and 1997. Before James crossed over to join the NDT fraternity, he was working as a licensed aircraft engineer with Kenya Airways from 1978 to 1983. The background knowledge of maintenance he gained while working as a maintenance licensed engineer makes it easy for him to integrate with the maintenance team, while performing the non-destructive inspections. James has seen it all in terms of certification revolution of NDT personnel. He has gone through certification by CSWIP, PCN and now holds EN 4179 certification as a Level 3 in aerospace sector.
In the year 2008, KCAA enhanced the requirement of service level agreement between companies providing services for each other. Operators in Wilson airport found themselves in a dilemma of not knowing how they would handle the NDT aspect. It became apparent that the operators required a facility to be set up in Wilson airport to solve their predicaments. James found it necessary to part ways with the national carrier so as to serve the Wilson Airport community that needed NDT services urgently. He approached Fly 540 Aviation and requested for space to set up the much needed NDT facility.
In the year 2013, NDT Support Services re-located to bigger premises in The Aviation Logistic Centre (TALC) and embarked on getting KCAA AMO approval. More staff were recruited, equipment were purchased, and Quality Management Systems was developed and documented. In June 2018, the company gained the much awaited KCAA approval on specialised services. After gaining the KCAA approval, paper work was compiled in view of requesting for TCAA approval. In March 2020 TCAA granted NDT Support Services an AMO approval hence making it possible for the company to perform inspections on Tanzania registered aircrafts. The company is in the process of re-branding itself again into new heights.
